How do you choose a name?

We here at BYR have spent a of time lately brainstorming vehicle names for our new rig. Over the past six years we've stuck to a Formula 1 inspired naming system:

• 2003 - O-Three (entered as Bendigo Bank BYR)
• 2004 - BY-04
• 2006 - BY-06
• 2007 - BY-06 MkII
• 2008 - BY-08

We are proud of our history, but are now consulting the dictionary for some new terms. 'Consulting' is a loose term, since it involves opening to any page and pointing with a finger.

This process has also made me reflect today about team names of the past and I think they tend to fit into a few different categories:

'Noble' Names
These names draw on inspirational qualities or characteristics and tend to end in 'ous'
Some examples include Tenacious, Intensus, Alchemy, Conquistador, Rampage, Intrepid, Rapacious.

'Race Team' & Sponsored Names -
The team might be sponsored or wanting to add a professional touch.
eg. DAS Racing, Bendigo Bank BYR, Trend Ice.

Names with 'you-had-to-be-there' in-jokes -
Over the journey of building the vehicle, the team have had a share experience or joke that has stuck.
Eg, 'Molten Chicken' (BSSC 2001), Parade College's 'Big Papa' (2008) or Highview's '3-Nil' (2006)

'Fun' for the heck of it Names -
For those times when it all gets a bit too serious, it's great to know there are prepared to put a shoe in the front of the vehicle and call it 'The Shark', or Bendigo Senior's 'Bukkamalzir', 'The Battered Sav' or 'Grug'.

Acronym & Alphanumeric Names -
Using the flexibility of the English language, teams have been exploiting this one for years!
Flora Hill's 'WAMTOS' (We Actually Made This Ourselves) and 'Carbon8' or Padua College's 'XLR8' are some famous examples.

Characteristic names -
Here you take a unique aspect of a vehicle and incorporate it into the team name.
A four wheeler called 'N4Sir' or a front wheel drive, rear wheel steer vehicle with a differential called 'Moby Diff' or a half composite monocoque/half cromo-framed hybrid called 'Half-Coqued'.

Traditional School Names -
Year in, year out this school photocopies the previous entry form and sends it in, sometimes with some small variation for 'fun'.
A bit confused? Think the Wonthaggi 'Wizards', Berwick 'Fire____', Aberfoyle 'Hubcaps', St Therese's 'Eco Racers'

Old Bearded Mate wins pursuit race!

Bendigo Youth Racing's.....uhhh....hmmm- "Old Bearded Mate", has won the 1st Annual Cartridge World Bendigo HPV Pursuit Race. The event was a support race for the Bendigo International Madison, a world renowned event that features elite cyclists from around the globe.
With rego, scruteneering and rider briefings out of the way, the event finally started, but not before BY-06's..... uhhh......Old bearded mate's RH wheel was replaced due to several broken spokes- a remenant of the previous weekend.
10 qualifying rounds were held from 1130am, featuring 4 HPVs per round. The 4 fastest runs from each class would then make it to the final later in the day.
The field was quite large and of a high quality. BSSC had an off day, with none of their runs fast enough to make the finals. Instead these positions were taken by the Weeroona faired vehicles in the field- The above mentioned were very much in their comfort zone: the sleek shape which lacked the frontal area of the other Bendigo trikes excelled on the smooth, broad cornered velodrome. So much so that each class final was dominated by them!
BY-06 and BY-03 qualified easily for the community class. The Old bearded mate had 2 runs with Cal Ridge and Mark Anson at the wheel, whilst BY-03 had 1 run courtesy of Daryl King. Cal and Daryl qualified for the final.

The community final was a no-brainer for most. Cal the miracle child wasn't known for being slow, and neither was the vehicle he was piloting. The other no brainer was that Daryl loves a good pie, and thus wasn't in contention for the win. Sorry mate.

The final went like clockwork, with Cal easily accounting for the Ziptar vehicle and the Silver Bullet. Daryl finished 4th in BY-03.

Thanx to Cartridge World there were cash prizes on offer. Cal recieved $100 for his win and was quite estatic....until everyone realised he was still owing money from the Wonthaggi campaign. Cal was promptly rushed by the team.

Bendigo Youth Racing played other roles on the day. Several team members volunteered as race marshals, whilst others lended their legs to BSSC's vehicles for their runs in the community and secondary sections.
Bendigo Youth Racing would like to thank the organisers and Cartridge World for organising the event. It was run in a very professional, sorted manner and reflected the sport of Human Powered Vehicles in a very positive light. It was a fine day had by all!

Bendigo Youth Racing in 2008

Bendigo Youth Racing Inc. is back in 2008! After a productive “holiday” away from the sport of HPV racing, BYR is pumped and ready to go.
Much has changed since our last outing at the Casey Cycling Festival, with several team members parting ways, and the void filled with 5 new faces. The energy is also different, with the younger fellas finally taking charge of the responsibilities vacated by previous, older members. This all adds up to productive, determined work sessions and stable, well thought out training regimes.
Joining President Jarred Henderson in leadership roles in 2008 are Rowan Nankervis as BYR training coordinator, Deven Pierce as Treasurer and Mark Anson as “Carbon frame flow coat” coordinator….

Calendar of Events 2008

Bendigo Youth Racing will be running a vehicle at the Australian International Pedal Prix at Murry Bridge in September. We hope to have a new vehicle, BY-08, complete in time. BY-08 will be a lighter, more refined version of the extremely successful BY-06.

Bendigo Youth Racing is currently preparing for the Wonthaggi Human Powered Grand Prix, held on the 29th of February until March 2nd. BYR has been quite successful at Wonthaggi in previous years, and looks forward to some new competition. Bendigo Youth Racing plans to run 2 teams @ Wonthaggi, with an all male team leading the charge in a re-skinned BY-06 and, in a BYR first, an all female team piloting BY-03. Both vehicles have won a Wonthaggi HPV GP each, setting records along the way.
